Some say the best thing about birthdays are the gifts. Others say, the party. And there are even those who celebrate the fact that they are yet another year older and wiser. To me, the best part is the cake. Luckily, my husband understands this about me. He came home tonight bearing cake and it wasn't just any cake. It was a bonafide, double-chocolate birthday cake that he special-ordered from a cake shop where all they do is bake cakes. Big cakes, wedding cakes, cupcakes, birthday cakes. These folks know cakes. My man, he doesn't mess around when it comes to my happiness.
In fact, the delivery of this (orgasm-enducing, if you must know) cake was the grand-finale of a weekend birthday extravaganza. On Friday night, Roger cooked New York Strips and we had an inside date night of the highest order. Saturday night, before our babysitter arrived, Roger gave me my birthday gifts: a makeup mirror and Salvador Dali perfume. Then, we both got dressed up and met some friends at our gym's grand-opening party (1500 people, a live band and open bar) before heading over to a neighborhood five-star restaurant for a romantic, late-night dinner.
Roger had an amazing, traditional bouillabaisse and I had succulent lamb medallions. The dinner was topped off with a special-order, 30-minutes-in-the-making chocolate soufflé cake to die for. Knowing that to get a bite he'd most likely have to pin me to the floor first, Roger graciously encouraged me to enjoy the dessert by myself. Its chocolately rich decadence overwhelmed me so much that I nearly passed out. But, I savored every bite, trying to draw out our lovely date. I was enjoying my time with Roger, the champagne, the soufflé and the hipster crowd that this restaurant attracts. Having a romantic Saturday night out with my husband is a rare and treasured occurrence and I didn't want it to end.
Although our reservation was for 9:00, and I thought we'd take advantage of the babysitter and be gone for hours, we were home by a respectable 10:45. We stayed up late watching Saturday Night Live and went to bed sometime around 1:00 but I found that I couldn't sleep. Delaney has a little cough (that appears only at night while she's sleeping) and between jumping up to check on her and jumping out of my skin from the caffeine high provided by the soufflé, I didn't get much rest.
We spent what ended up to be a rainy Sunday at home with Delaney, playing with her and lounging around in our pajamas.
And, while I certainly didn't party as hard as I did on my 25th birthday, I can guarantee that our little family celebration meant so much more.
Happy Belated Birthday, Colleen!!!!!!!!!
