When in the deepest throes of despair over Delaney's terrible diarrhea this week I broke down and called her pediatrician's office. I wanted to know if there was anything--anything at all--that I could give her to stop the flow of the evil stuff that was making us both miserable. In my heart I knew they'd tell me to go fly a kite, that--duh!--you don't give kids anti diarrheal medication and that I needed to suck it up and get through it. Strangely, that's not what they told me at all. Thank God I asked.
The nurse I spoke to recommended a product called FlorastorKids. It's a powder, a kid-friendly version of capsules created for adults that contain probiotics to help restore the gut back to it's normal function. All I know is, it's miracle-working stuff and, therefore, hard to find. After getting my (brave) parents to watch Delaney for an hour, I slipped out of the house and headed to the closest pharmacy. FloraStor is available over-the-counter but you have to ask the pharmacist for it. The pharmacy I went to had heard of the stuff but had to special order it. I called another nearby pharmacy and got the same story - they can't keep the stuff in stock. Finally, I headed to my pharmacy. It's a little farther away from our house but it's locally-owned and provides superb, personalized service. They had a sample I could take and they put in a special order for the stuff that I could pick up the next morning.
I put a dose of the powder in some diluted juice for Delaney and within four hours of her drinking it, the diarrhea stopped completely and by the next day "everything" returned to normal. I've continued to give her the regular dose (once in the morning and once in the evening) and the diarrhea hasn't returned! I had been convinced that nothing short of a plug would stop that evil liquid from coming. Thank goodness I didn't have to resort to that (lemme tell ya, it was close, though...). Our doctor's office recommends giving FlorastorKids for 3-5 days and I'll do just that. I'll also keep the rest of the packets in our medicine cupboard because slipping a miracle "mickey" in my kid's drink beats a plug any day.
